The German Bundesliga 2 looks a lot like the Bundesliga in that it has 18 teams which face each other twice during the season. The bottom two teams in the Bundesliga 2 get relegated, while the 16th ranked team plays the third ranked team in German Third League. The top two teams are promoted to , and the third place team faces off in a playoff against the 16th ranked team from Bundesliga to see who gets promoted.
